About the climb
My name is Nadine Yazbek. I am a junior primary teacher by trade with a strong desire to empower individuals in developing countries through schooling, education and medical care. I believe that we are global citizens and have a responsibility to each and every human being on this planet. After visiting Lao PDR last year, I fell in love with the people. Throughout my travels I have never met such resilient and positive individuals who grab on to every opportunity they can.
During September of 2012, I am flying to Tanzania and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. In doing so I am hoping to raise $10 000 from fundraising and donations for a charity I visited when I was in Lao PDR. The charity is called COPE (Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise) and they have given me the authority to raise money on their behalf . They are a local Lao non-for-profit organization that provide high quality prostheses and mobility devices as well as rehabilitation care free of cost. Below is a list of what the money raised will buy:
US$ 40 - Special Chair for a child with a disability
US$ 75 - Buy a leg
US$ 150 - Prosthetic Arm
US$ 200 - Complete Treatment
US$ 250 - Club Foot Treatment
These amazing services not only mobilise the individual but enables them to help not only their family but the wider community.
Lao PDR is the most heavily bombed country, per capita, in history. During the Vietnam War, more than 580,000 bombing missions were conducted over Lao PDR, one every 9 minutes over 10 years. Of 270 million cluster bombs dropped on the Lao PDR during the time of the Vietnam War , it is estimated that up to 30% (80 million) failed to detonate and continue to pose a threat.
The effect of unexploded ordnance (UXOs) on Lao PDR has been and continues to be immense. UXOs are 'explosive weapons that failed to detonate when they were fired, dropped, launched or projected, and still pose a risk of exploding. In Lao PDR, there are a range of UXOs contaminating the countryside, including large bombs, rockets, grenades, artillery munitions, mortars, landmines and cluster munitions.
It has been estimated that around 20 000 injuries and deaths as a result of UXOs have occurred post the Vietnam War, with more than 50% of victims in the post-conflict era being children. It is unfortunate that the local people are still suffering from the remnants of a war that occurred 40 years ago.
